scifirenegade: (nope | marquis)
The Internet Archive was forced to delete half a million books due to that lawsuit. It's still ongoing. We live in the darkest timeline.

The Internet Archive is a godsend, it helped me immensely throughout my uni life. My local libraries don't always have the books I need (and for those not in the know, I've been living a nightmare related to interlibrary loans). It's not just an essential tool, it's an essential place, a library; albeit not a physical one.

Copywright must die. It destroys the preservation and availability of media. It's because of it that a whole bunch of film restorations never see the light of day besides special screenings.

Was mucking about alternative search engines that specifically focus on The Old Web (TM), and came across a character reference page for a book series called Anno Dracula, which I have never heard before. From what I could gather, Dracula wins, marries the Queen of England and the Jack the Ripper is there (on the first book, at least). Seems like a love or it hate series, reviews are very mixed.

The thing with the series is the crazy amount of characters from pre-established materials. There's a bunch of Sherlock Holmes characters (including the detective), Raffles, Carmilla and Count Orlok (makes sense, they are vampires, although isn't Orlok Dracula with another name? Anyway). Oh, and Dr. Caligari. And many many more.

The second book has a character named Hardt, and the page lists him as:

Hardt (Conrad Veidt)– from the film The Spy in Black

Hardt! Captain Ernst "Bütter" Hardt!

The myth, the legend! (Excuse the crummy picture, the Spy in Black folder is severely lacking when it comes to screencaps)

And I snooped the page in which he's introduced and I guess he's a vampire?? Recently turned by Count Orlok??

I wonder how that works, considering Hardt dies in the end of The Spy in Black (hey, it's Conrad Veidt, his characters always die; it's not spoilers).

Maybe the author got bummed about Veidt never getting to be Dracula. IMHO, while it would be neat to see how he would do it, Connie is a victim of typecasting as is, I wouldn't want it to be even worse.

It will still take a while to finish my current reads to get to these books, though. Bummer.
